Science, the Endless Frontier
The National Science Foundation has rendered a useful service in reprinting Science, the Endless Frontier as part of its tenth anniversary observance. The Report, as well as the studies that supported it, represents the collective efforts of a group of distinguished scientists and other scholars who brought their special experience and knowledge to bear on the problem of establishing a strong research and development effort in the postwar period.
Their findings with respect to the relations of government to science and education merit a rereading in the light of today’s events. Dr. Waterman’s Introduction constitutes an effective summary of the extent to which the recommendations of Science, the Endless Frontier have been realized during the Fifteen years since it first appeared. I welcome the republication and hope that it will be a genuine service to all who have responsibilities for the national effort in scientific research and development.
